Day of the Dead: A Day to honor the dead, not to celebrate death.
The Day of the Dead celebration, or better known as día de los Muertos, is a day to remember those who have gone before us, marked with the sign of Christ. We do not celebrate death; we honor the dead. Over the years, pilgrims have asked me the reason death is celebrated, but we must understand that we do not do that. We honor the deceased loved ones through prayer and works of mercy on the day after All Saints Day. It is only fitting that we honor the dead with a special feast and/or in different ways, depending on the country or region, the day after we commemorate all saints, because we all want to attain heaven.
Celebrating all saints, we include those who enjoy the beatific vision even if they are not officially canonized by the Church. However, there are Saints who are very well known all over the world such as Saint Francis of Assisi or Saint Peter the Apostle; there are others who are known and venerated only in a particular country or diocese; saints who died at a very young age and others who died being elderly already, men and women, rich and poor, active or contemplative. But what they all have in common is that they are dead, and it becomes our turn, the living human beings, at this moment, to strive to become saints wherever we are and whatever we do.
In our lives, we all have lost a family member or a good friend, and we pray for them, offer a Mass or light a candle, asking God for their eternal repose. Here at the Basilica, we offer a novena of Masses for all those who have died and need our prayers to help them get into heaven. At the same time, prayers to saints, known or unknown, help us here on earth. Please send us the names of your loved ones who have died so we can place them at the foot of the altar where we celebrate daily Mass and will offer it for them. Thank you in advance for your generous donations that help us tend to the thousands of pilgrims who come every week searching for peace and consolation.
God bless you, and God welcome into eternity all our loved ones. Pray for the souls in purgatory, especially those in need of God’s mercy.

El Día de los Muertos: un día para honrar a los muertos, no para celebrar la muerte.
La celebración del Día de los Muertos es un día para recordar a aquellos que nos han precedido, marcado con el signo de Cristo. No celebramos la muerte; honramos a los muertos. A lo largo de los años, los peregrinos me han preguntado la razón por la que se celebra la muerte, pero debemos entender que no hacemos eso. Honramos a nuestros seres queridos fallecidos por medio de la oración y las obras de misericordia el día después del Día de Todos los Santos. Es justo que honremos a los muertos con un festejo especial y/o de diferentes maneras, dependiendo del país o región, el día después de conmemorar a todos los santos, porque todos queremos alcanzar el cielo.
Celebrando a todos los santos, incluimos a aquellos que disfrutan de la visión beatífica incluso si no están oficialmente canonizados por la iglesia. Sin embargo, hay Santos que son muy conocidos en todo el mundo, como San Francisco de Asís o San Pedro Apóstol; hay otros que son conocidos y venerados solo en un país o diócesis particular; santos que fallecieron a una edad muy joven y otros que murieron siendo ya ancianos, hombres y mujeres, ricos y pobres, activos o contemplativos. Pero lo que todos tienen en común es que están muertos, y nos toca a nosotros, los seres humanos vivos, en este momento, esforzarnos por convertirnos en santos donde sea que estemos y en lo que sea que hagamos.
En nuestras vidas, todos hemos perdido a un familiar o a un buen amigo, y oramos por ellos, ofrecemos una Misa o encendemos una vela, pidiéndole a Dios su eterno descanso. Aquí en la Basílica, ofrecemos una novena de Misas por todos aquellos que han fallecido y que necesitan nuestras oraciones para ayudarlos a llegar al cielo. Al mismo tiempo, las oraciones a los santos, conocidos o desconocidos nos ayudan aquí en la tierra. Por favor, envíenos los nombres de sus seres queridos que han fallecido para que podamos colocarlos a los pies del altar donde celebramos la Misa diaria y la ofreceremos por ellos. Gracias de antemano por sus generosas donaciones que nos ayudan a atender a los miles de peregrinos que vienen cada semana en busca de paz y consuelo.
Dios los bendiga, y que Dios reciba en la eternidad a todos nuestros seres queridos. Reza por las almas en el purgatorio, especialmente por aquellas que más necesitan la misericordia de Dios.
