Saint Mathew tells us that Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus Who is called the Christ (1:16). Saint Joseph was the husband of Mary, virginal father of Jesus, and Patriarch of the Church. These titles proclaim the grandeur of the mission and the sublime gifts with which his soul was adorned by Divine Providence.
It is an unmatched figure exalted by the Church together with Mary. Saint Joseph’s praises shall never be adequately sung. So profuse are the marvels and privileges that God was pleased to bestow upon him. Unfortunately, this glorious patriarch is often forgotten and devotion to him falls short of what he merits.
Saint Mathew’s narrative highlights what was previously stated, for it reveals the honesty and unshakable faith of Saint Joseph in the face of the greatest difficulties. Frenzy held no sway in his soul, an example for a world that worships agitation and restlessness. Indeed, the lives of the saints unfold calmly and serenely, even amid trials. When they suffer setbacks, they reflect, decide, and go forward without losing peace of soul.
When Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he prepared to leave and, crushed by sorrow, he received a revelation from an Angel: the fruit Mary Most Holy bore within her was God himself made man, and she would be Mother without ceasing to be virgin! As for him, contrary to what he thought, he was indeed worthy of his heavenly spouse, becoming one of the first to know the sacred mystery of the Incarnation of the Word.
Here at the Basilica, we honor in a special way Joseph the husband of Mary, the adoptive father of the Word made flesh, with a novena of Masses asking him to intercede for us and for those that we pray for. Please join us in venerating this wonderful saint during the novena.

Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossible possible, come to my aid in these times of anguish and difficulty. Take under your protection the serious and troubling situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome. My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is as great as your power. Amen.
San Mateo nos dice que Jacob fue el padre de José, el esposo de María. De ella nació Jesús, llamado el Cristo (1:16). San José fue el esposo de María, padre virginal de Jesús, y Patriarca de la Iglesia. Estos títulos proclaman la grandeza de la misión y los dones sublimes con que su alma fue adornada por la Divina Providencia.
Es una figura inigualable exaltada por la Iglesia junto a María. Las alabanzas de San José nunca se cantarán adecuadamente. Tan profusas son las maravillas y privilegios que Dios se complació en concederle. Desafortunadamente, este glorioso patriarca a menudo es olvidado y la devoción hacia él no está a la altura de lo que merece.
El relato de San Mateo pone de relieve lo que se ha dicho anteriormente, porque revela la honestidad y la fe inquebrantable de San José frente a las mayores dificultades. El frenesí no dominaba su alma, un ejemplo para un mundo que rinde culto a la agitación y la inquietud. De hecho, la vida de los santos se desarrolla con calma y serenidad, incluso en medio de pruebas. Cuando sufren contratiempos, reflexionan, deciden y avanzan sin perder la paz del alma.
Cuando José se enteró de que María estaba embarazada, se preparó para partir y, desplomado por la tristeza, recibió una revelación de un ángel: el fruto que María Santísima llevaba en sí era Dios mismo hecho hombre, ¡y ella sería Madre sin dejar de ser virgen! En cuanto a él, contrariamente a lo que pensaba, era realmente digno de su esposa celestial, convirtiéndose en uno de los primeros en conocer el sagrado misterio de la Encarnación del Verbo.
Aquí, en la Basílica, honramos de manera especial a José, el esposo de María, el padre adoptivo del Verbo hecho carne, con una novena de Misas pidiéndole que interceda por nosotros y por aquellos por los que rezamos. Únase a nosotros para venerar a este maravilloso santo durante la novena.

Glorioso patriarca San José, cuyo poder sabe hacer posibles las cosas imposibles, ven en mi ayuda en estos momentos de angustia y dificultad. Toma bajo tu protección las situaciones tan graves y difíciles que te confío, para que tengan una buena solución. Mi amado Padre, toda mi confianza está puesta en ti. Que no se diga que te haya invocado en vano y, como puedes hacer todo con Jesús y María, muéstrame que tu bondad es tan grande como tu poder. Amén.
