GUIDE FOR EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE FOR THE CONFESSION OF SINS

SIX STEPS FOR A GOOD CONFESSION

  • Examine your conscience – what sins have you committed since your last good confession.
  • Be sincerely sorry for your sins.
  • Confess your sins to the priest.
  • Make certain that you confess all your mortal sins and the number of them.
  • After your confession, do the penance the priest gives to you.
  • Pray daily for the strength to avoid the occasion of sin, especially for those sins you were just absolved from.

FIRST COMMANDMENT

  • Did I doubt or deny that God exists?
  • Do I give time to God every day in prayer?
  • Do I seek to love Him with all my heart?
  • Did I refuse to believe what God has revealed to us?
  • Did I despair or presume of God’s mercy?
  • Did I deny that I was Catholic?
  • Did I leave the Catholic Faith?
  • Have I ever received Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin?
  • Have I been involved in superstitious practices such as fortune telling, horoscopes, the occult, good-luck charms, tarot cards, palmistry, Ouija boards, séances, curanderas, or reincarnation?
  • In a prior confession, have I ever told a lie or have I withheld a mortal sin?
  • Did I have false gods in my life to which I gave greater attention than God, like money, profession, drugs, TV, internet, fame, pleasure, property, belongings, etc.?

SECOND COMMANDMENT

  • Did I blaspheme or insult God?
  • Did I take God’s Name in vain? (Using it lightly or carelessly)
  • Did I curse, or break an oath or vow?
  • Did I get angry with God?

THIRD COMMANDMENT

  • Did I miss Sunday Mass or a Day of Obligation through my own fault?
  • Did I come to Mass on time?
  • Did I leave Mass early?
  • Did I do needless work on Sunday?
  • Did I set aside Sunday as a day of rest and a family day?
  • Did I show reverence in the Presence of the Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament?

FOURTH COMMANDMENT

  • Did I disobey or disrespect my parents or legitimate superiors?
  • Did I neglect my duties to my husband, wife, children, or parents?
  • Did I neglect to give good religious example to my family?
  • Did I fail to actively take an interest in the religious education and formation of my children?
  • Did I fail to educate myself on the true teachings of the Church?
  • Did I give scandal by what I said or did, especially to the young?
  • Did I cause anyone to leave the faith?
  • Did I cause tension and fights in my family?
  • Did I care for my aged and infirm relatives?

FIFTH COMMANDMENT

  • Did I kill or physically injure anyone?
  • Did I have an abortion, or advise someone else to have an abortion? (Note: According to Canon 1398, one who procures an abortion is automatically excommunicated, as is anyone who is involved in an abortion. The excommunication will be lifted in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.)
  • Did I use or cause my spouse to use birth control pills (whether or not I realized that some birth control pills act as abortifacients if conception takes place)?
  • Did I attempt suicide?
  • Did I take part in or approve of “mercy killing” (euthanasia)?
  • Did I get angry or impatient? Was I unkind, prideful, vengeful, jealous, or hateful toward another?
  • Did I give bad example by drug abuse, drinking alcohol to excess, fighting, quarreling?
  • Did I use excessive force in disciplining my children?
  • Did I abuse my children in any way, whether mental, psychological, physical, or sexual?

SIXTH & NINTH COMMANDMENT

  • Have I practiced the virtue of chastity?
  • Did I willfully entertain impure thoughts or desires?
  • Did I use impure or suggestive words? Did I tell or listen to impure stories?
  • Did I deliberately purchase, watch, or use pornography or other impure images or videos (suggestive, sensual)?
  • Did I deliberately read impure materials?
  • Did I avoid the occasions of impurity?
  • Did I purposely dress immodestly?
  • Did I commit impure acts by myself?
  • Did I commit impure acts with another such as fornication or adultery?
  • Did I engage in homosexual activity?
  • Did I practice artificial birth control?
  • Did I marry or advise anyone to marry outside the Church?
  • Did I respect all members of the opposite sex, or have I thought of other people as objects?
  • Did I or my spouse undergo sterilization?
  • Did I abuse my marriage rights?

SEVENTH & TENTH COMMANDMENT

  • Did I steal or cheat?
  • Did I help or encourage others to steal, cheat, or keep stolen goods?
  • Have I made restitution for stolen goods?
  • Did I fulfill my contracts?
  • Did I pay my bills on time?
  • Did I give or accept bribes?
  • Did I rashly gamble or speculate?
  • Did I deprive my family of the necessities of life?
  • Did I waste time at work, school, or at home?
  • Did I give in to sloth (laziness)?
  • Was I envious of other people’s families or possessions?
  • Did I make material possessions the purpose of my life?
  • Did I give a full day’s work for a full day’s pay?
  • Did I give a fair wage to my employees?

EIGHTH COMMANDMENT

  • Did I lie?
  • Did I deliberately deceive others, or injure others by lies?
  • Did I commit perjury?
  • Did I gossip or reveal others’ faults or sins?
  • Did I fail to keep secret what should be confidential?

OTHER SINS

  • Did I fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?
  • Did I eat meat on the Fridays of Lent or Ash Wednesday?
  • Did I fail to receive Holy Communion during Eastertime?
  • Did I go to Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin?
  • Did I abstain (fast) from any food or drink, (with the exception of only water and medicine), for at least the period of one hour before receiving Holy Communion?
  • Did I make a bad confession?
  • Did I fail to contribute to the support of the Church?

ACT OF CONTRITION

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

SEIS PASOS PARA UNA BUENA CONFESIÓN

  • Examine su consciencia – ¿Qué pecados ha cometido desde la última buena confesión?
  • Siéntase sinceramente arrepentido de sus pecados.
  • Confiese sus pecados al Sacerdote.
  • Asegúrese que confiese todos sus pecados mortales incluyendo el número de veces.

PRIMER MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Dudé o negué la existencia de Dios?
  • ¿Le doy tiempo a Dios todos los días en la oración?
  • ¿Busco amarlo con todo el corazón?
  • ¿Me he rehusado a creer lo que Dios nos ha revelado?
  • ¿Me desesperé o presumí de la misericordia de Dios?
  • ¿Negué ser Católico?
  • ¿Abandoné mi Fe Católica?
  • ¿He recibido la Santa Comunión en estado de pecado mortal?
  • ¿He estado involucrado o creo en prácticas supersticiosas como: adivinación, horóscopos, ocultismo, amuletos, cartas del tarot, lectura de la mano (quiromancia), güija, sesiones de espiritismo, curanderas o reencarnación?
  • ¿En alguna previa Confesión, he mentido o he omitido mencionar algún pecado mortal?

SEGUNDO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Blasfemé o insulté a Dios?
  • ¿Usé el Nombre de Dios en vano? (Usándolo a la ligera, innecesariamente o descuidadamente)
  • ¿Maldije o rompí un juramento o voto?
  • ¿Me enojé con Dios?

TERCER MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Falté a la Misa Dominical o a un Día de Obligación por mi propia culpa?
  • ¿Llegué a tiempo a Misa?
  • ¿Me fui temprano?
  • ¿Trabajé innecesariamente el Domingo?
  • ¿Guardé el Domingo como día de descanso y día familiar?
  • ¿Mostré reverencia en la Presencia del Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento?

CUARTO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Desobedecí o le falte el respeto a mis padres o legítimos superiores?
  • ¿Descuidé de mis deberes hacia mi esposo/esposa, hijos o padres?
  • ¿Descuidé de dar buen ejemplo religioso a mi familia?
  • ¿Fallé en tomar un interés activo en la educación y formación religiosa de mis hijos?
  • ¿Fallé en educarme sobre las verdaderas enseñanzas de la Iglesia?
  • ¿Causé escándalo por lo que dije o hice, especialmente a los jóvenes?
  • ¿Hice que alguien dejara la fe?
  • ¿Provoqué tensión y peleas en mi familia?
  • ¿Cuidé de mis parientes ancianos y enfermos?

QUINTO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Maté o lastimé físicamente a alguien?
  • ¿Tuve un aborto o le aconsejé a otra persona que abortara? Nota: Según el Canon 1398, quien procura un aborto queda automáticamente excomulgado, así como cualquiera que esté involucrado en un aborto. La excomunión se levantará en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación.
  • ¿Usé o hice que mi cónyuge usara píldoras anticonceptivas (ya sea que me haya dado cuenta o no de que algunas píldoras anticonceptivas actúan como abortivos si se produce la concepción)?
  • ¿Intenté suicidarme?
  • ¿Participé o aprobé la eutanasia (“muerte misericordiosa”)?
  • ¿Me enojé o me impacienté? ¿Fui descortés, orgulloso, vengativo, celoso, u odioso hacia otro?
  • ¿Di mal ejemplo con el abuso de drogas, o con beber alcohol en exceso, o con buscar peleas o discusiones?
  • ¿Usé fuerza excesiva al disciplinar a mis hijos?
  • ¿Abusé de mis hijos en alguna manera, ya sea mental, psicológica, física o sexual?

SEXTO Y NOVENO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿He practicado la virtud de la castidad?
  • ¿Tuve intencionalmente pensamientos/deseos impuros?
  • ¿Usé palabras impuras o sugestivas? ¿Conté o escuché historias impuras?
  • ¿Deliberadamente compré, miré o utilicé la pornografía u otras imágenes o videos impuros (sugestivos, sensuales)?
  • ¿Leí deliberadamente materiales impuros?
  • ¿Evité las ocasiones de impureza?
  • ¿Me vestí inmodestamente a propósito?
  • ¿Cometí actos impuros a solas?
  • ¿Cometí actos impuros con otro como fornicación o adulterio?
  • ¿Me involucré en actividades homosexuales?
  • ¿Practiqué el control de la natalidad artificial?
  • ¿Me casé o le aconsejé a alguien que se casara fuera de la Iglesia?
  • ¿Respeté a todos los miembros del sexo opuesto, o he pensado en otras personas como objetos?
  • ¿Nos sometimos mi cónyuge o yo a una esterilización?
  • ¿Abusé de mis derechos matrimoniales?

SÉPTIMO Y DÉCIMO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Robé o engañé?
  • ¿Ayudé o animé a otros a robar o a quedarse con los bienes robados?
  • ¿He hecho restitución por los bienes robados?
  • ¿Cumplí mis contratos?
  • ¿Pagué mis cuentas a tiempo?
  • ¿Di o acepté sobornos?
  • ¿Aposté o especulé precipitadamente?
  • ¿Privé a mi familia de las necesidades de la vida?
  • ¿Perdí el tiempo en el trabajo, la escuela o en casa?
  • ¿Fui perezoso?
  • ¿Envidié las familias o posesiones de otros?
  • ¿Hice de las posesiones materiales el propósito de mi vida?
  • ¿Di el trabajo de un día completo por el pago de un día completo?
  • ¿Di un salario justo a mis empleados?

OCTAVO MANDAMIENTO

  • ¿Mentí?
  • ¿Engañé deliberadamente a otros, o los lastimé con mentiras?
  • ¿Cometí perjurio?
  • ¿Chismeé o revelé las faltas o los pecados de otros?
  • ¿Fallé en mantener en secreto lo que debería ser confidencial?

OTROS PECADOS

  • ¿Ayuné el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo?
  • ¿Comí carne los viernes de cuaresma o miércoles de ceniza?
  • ¿Dejé de recibir la Sagrada Comunión durante el tiempo de Pascua?
  • ¿Recibí la Santa Comunión en estado de pecado mortal?
  • ¿Me abstuve de cualquier comida o bebida (con la excepción de agua y medicinas), por lo menos durante una hora antes de recibir la Sagrada Comunión?
  • ¿Hice una mala confesión?
  • ¿Dejé de contribuir al sostenimiento de la Iglesia?

ACTO DE CONTRICIÓN

Señor mío Jesucristo, Dios y hombre verdadero, me pesa de todo corazón haber pecado, porque he merecido el infierno y perdido el cielo, pero sobre todo porque te ofendí a ti que eres tan bueno y que tanto me amas y a quien yo quiero amar sobre todas las cosas. Propongo firmemente enmendarme y alejarme de las ocasiones de pecar, confesarme y cumplir la penitencia. Confió me perdonarás por tu infinita misericordia. Amén.
