A few years ago, I wrote a little book entitled Guadalupe: An Icon to be Read. Many pilgrims purchased the book and later invited me to present it at different parishes across the Valley. I must admit that every time I do a presentation on this book, I learn more about the Guadalupe event that reconciled two cultures and unified a polarized country that was fight-ing to find its own new identity.
Here at the Basilica, the annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe grows larger and more beautiful each year.
The festivities begin on the evening of December 11th, as groups, choirs, matachins (traditional Aztec dancers), mariachis, norteño bands, and Tejano musicians gather to honor Our Lady. From early evening, pilgrims arrive to pray, and by the time the traditional mañanitas (serenade) begin, the Basilica is filled to capacity.
The midnight Mass is a celebration overflowing with music, dance, and deep devotion. The Basilica itself cannot hold all who come—our doors remain open so that those outside may still hear and participate in the liturgy.
After Mass, several bands continue the celebration, singing joyfully to Our Lady. Outside, food booths offer hot chocolate, pan dulce, coffee, traditional Mexican dishes, and souvenirs, creating a festive and faith-filled atmosphere. Inside, a magnificent floral arrangement adorns the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, remaining in place for several days after the celebration.
After eight years serving at the Basili-ca, I can say with certainty that the midnight Mass honoring La Guadalupana is the most well-attended Mass of the entire year. Thousands of faithful come throughout the day and night bringing bouquets of roses, lighting a candle, praying, or simply gazing and reflecting upon the sacred image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who still tells each of us: “Why are you afraid?
Am I not here, I who am your mother?” We invite you to join us in the novena of Masses celebrated in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe during the nine days leading up to her feast. Please write the names of your loved ones and send them to us so we may include them in prayer.

Guadalupe: Un ícono para ser leído
Hace algunos años escribí un pequeño libro titulado Guadalupe: Un ícono para ser leído. Muchos peregrinos adquirieron el libro y, posteriormente, me invitaron a presentarlo en diferentes parroquias del Valle. Debo confesar que cada vez que hago una presentación sobre este tema, aprendo algo nuevo sobre el acontecimiento guadalupano que logró reconciliar dos culturas y unifi-car a un país polarizado en busca de identidad. Aquí en la Basílica, la celebración anual de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe crece cada año, volviéndose más grande y más festiva. Las festividades comienzan la tarde del 11 de diciembre, cuando grupos, coros, matachines (danzantes aztecas tradicionales), mariachis, conjuntos norteños y músicos tejano se reúnen para honrar a Nuestra Madre. Desde temprano en la tarde, los peregrinos comienzan a llegar para orar, y para cuando comienzan las tradicionales mañanitas, la Basílica ya está completamente llena. La Misa de medianoche es una celebración desbordante de música, danza y profunda devo-ción. La Basílica no puede contener a todos los que vienen; por eso mantenemos las puertas abiertas para que quienes están afuera también puedan escuchar y participar en la liturgia. Después de la
Misa, varios grupos musicales continúan la fiesta, cantándole con alegría a Nuestra Señora. Afuera, los puestos de comida ofrecen chocolate caliente, pan dulce, café, antojitos mexicanos y recuerdos, creando un ambiente festivo y lleno de fe. Dentro de la Basílica, un magnífico arreglo floral adorna la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Gua- dalupe y permanece allí varios días después de la celebración. Después de ocho años sirviendo en la Basílica, puedo afirmar con certeza que la Misa de medianoche en honor a La Guadalupana es la celebración más concurrida de todo el año. Miles de fieles asisten durante la noche y el día, trayendo ramos de rosas, encendiendo velas, orando o simplemente contemplando y reflexionando ante la sagrada imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, quien aún nos dice a cada uno de nosotros: “¿Por qué tienes miedo? ¿No estoy yo aquí, que soy tu madre?” Los invitamos a unirse a la novena de Misas que celebramos en honor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe durante los nueve días previos a su fiesta. Por favor, escriban los nombres de sus seres queridos y envíenlos para incluirlos en nuestras oraciones. Gracias, como siempre, por su generosidad y apoyo, que hacen posible continuar con el ministerio y la misión de la Basílica.
