Saint Peter was a Jewish fisherman born in Bethsaida, called by Jesus to be the first among the apostles. He became the first Pope of our church and died in Rome under Emperor Nero. His human remains were found under the altar of Saint Peter’s Basilica. We hold the primacy of Peter, and he is the first among many, not one among many. Saint Peter, pray for us.

First a persecutor of Christians, and after an encounter with the risen Christ, he began to learn more about Jesus and became an evangelizer until he died in Rome. One of the major Basilicas in Rome is dedicated to him and is believed to be built in the place where he was beheaded. Saint Paul, pray for us.

A relative of Jesus and son of the priest Zecharia and Elizabeth. He leapt for joy in his mother’s womb when he heard the voice of Mary. He is called the Prophet of the Highest and the precursor of the Savior. He presented Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the world's sins and was baptized with water to prepare the way. A Chinese Filipino, he became his country's protomartyr after his execution in Japan by the Tokugawa Shogunate during its persecution of Japanese-Christians in the 17th century. Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of, among others, the Philippines and Filipino people. He was tortured by being hung upside-down over a pit until he died. Saint Lorenzo, pray for us.

A French missionary and martyr who traveled to North America to work with the natives. On 18 October 1646, the Mohawks killed Father Jogues with a tomahawk and threw his body into the Mohawk River. Jogues' refusal to escape and how he accepted torture demonstrate selflessness. He believed that being martyred would mean partaking in the torment that Jesus had endured on the cross. A Ugandan martyr who protected a boy from King Mwanga II's sexual advances. When preparations were completed and the day had come for the execution on 3 June 1886, Lwanga was separated from the others by the Guardian of the Sacred Flame for private execution, in keeping with custom. As he was being burnt, Lwanga said to the Guardian, "It is as if you are pouring water on me. Please repent and become a Christian like me.” Saint Charles, pray for us.

Un mártir de Uganda que protegió a un adolescente de las insinuaciones sexuales del rey Mwanga II. A Mexican teenager martyr who died defending his faith. His parents saw him while he was being tortured by the Mexican federals who were asking him to renounce his Catholic faith, and he remained faithful. The torturers removed the skin from his feet and commanded him to walk towards the cemetery in Sahuayo, Michoacan, where he was killed while saying “Viva Cristo Rey y Santa Maria de Guadalupe”. San Jose, pray for us.

Sus padres lo vieron mientras era torturado por los federales mexicanos que le pedían que renunciara a su fe católica, y él permaneció fiel. Los torturadores le quitaron la piel de los pies y lo hicieron caminar hacia el cementerio de Sahuayo, Michoacán, donde fue asesinado mientras gritaba "Viva Cristo Rey y Santa María de Guadalupe". San Maximiliano Kolbe

A Polish priest and martyr who died in the Auschwitz concentration camps during World War II. He volunteered to die in place of a man who had a wife and children. Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer, and after they had been starved with no food or water for three weeks, only Kolbe and three other prisoners remained alive. The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they gave the four remaining prisoners lethal injections of carbolic acid. Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the deadly injection. He died on 14 August 1941. Saint Maximilian, pray for us.

A Salvadorian archbishop who lived through the Civil War in El Salvador. He dedicated his life to being the voice of the voiceless, to defend the impoverished from the abuses of the few rich Salvadorians who owned the country. Msgr. Romero had a series of recorded messages that were heard in the whole country, even when it was forbidden. He was assassinated while celebrating Mass in San Salvador. He would say that if he were killed, he would be resurrected among the people of El Salvador. Saint Oscar, pray for us.

A North American priest from Oklahoma who was a missionary priest in Guatemala. To better serve his community, he learned Spanish and Tz'utujil, the language of the natives. He also hosted radio programs teaching language and mathematics and preaching the word of God. In the middle of the night, the assassins came into his room and shot him twice. His human remains were flown back to Oklahoma, but his heart was buried under the altar of the church he served in Guatemala. Blessed Stanley, pray for us.

Un sacerdote norteamericano de Oklahoma que era un sacerdote misionero en Guatemala. Para servir mejor a su comunidad, aprendió español y Tz'utujil, el idioma de los nativos. A Roman Christian virgin and martyr known as the patroness of musicians. She sang to the Lord in her heart, and the legend about Cecilia's death says that after being struck three times on the neck with a sword, she lived for three days and asked the Pope to convert her home into a church. Thirteen centuries after her death, when the church of Saint Cecilia underwent a renovation, her incorrupt body was found. Saint Cecilia, pray for us.

Felicity, a slave woman imprisoned with Saint Perpetua and pregnant at the time, was martyred with her. They were put to death along with others at Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. They were martyred with a group of five catechumens who proclaimed their faith in Jesus Christ. Saint Felicity, pray for us.

Perpetua was a recently married, well-educated noblewoman, said to have been 22 years old at the time of her death, and mother of an infant son she was nursing. Her account opens with a conflict between her and her father, who desired that she recant her belief. Perpetua refused and was baptized before being moved to prison. In the days leading up to her martyrdom, Perpetua was imprisoned in Carthage. Saint Perpetua, pray for us.

Agnes was born in 291 into Roman nobility and raised as a Christian. She suffered martyrdom on 21 January 304, aged 12 or 13. Her high-ranking suitors, slighted by her resolute devotion to religious purity, sought to persecute her for her beliefs. Her father urged her to deny God, but she refused, and she was dragged naked through the streets to a brothel, then tried and sentenced to death. She was eventually beheaded after attempts to be burned at the stake failed. Saint Agnes, pray for us.

Lucy was born to rich and noble parents in 283. Her father was of Roman origin, but he died when she was five years old, leaving Lucy and her mother without a protective guardian. Paschasius ordered her to burn a sacrifice to the emperor's image. When she refused, Paschasius sentenced her to be defiled in a brothel. When the guards came to take her away, they could not move her even when they hitched her to a team of oxen. Bundles of wood were then heaped around her and set on fire, but they would not burn. Finally, she met her death by a sword thrust into her throat. Saint Lucy, pray for us.

Joan was born to a propertied peasant family at Domremy in northeast France. She was delivered and tied to a tall, plastered pillar for burning execution. She asked to view a cross as she died, and was given one by an English soldier made from a stick, which she kissed and placed next to her chest. She embraced it before her hands were bound, and it was held before her eyes during her execution. After her death, her remains were thrown into the Seine River. Saint Joan, pray for us.

Juana nació en el seno de una familia de campesinos en Domremy, en el noreste de Francia. Fue entregada y atada a un pilar alto y enyesado para la ejecución en llamas. Arrested and imprisoned on the 24th of June 1794, Theresa and her 16 companions continued to share their joy and their faith with others. Condemned to death for their loyalty to the Church, to their religious vows, and for their devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, they were guillotined in Paris on 17th July 1794 whilst singing hymns and after having renewed their vows to their prioress, Theresa of St. Augustine. Maria Goretti was an Italian virgin martyr of the Church, and one of the youngest saints to be canonized. She was born into a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and the family ended up sharing a house with another family, the Serenellis. She took over household duties while her mother and siblings worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro Serenellis, a 20-year-old, made sexual advances toward her. When she refused to submit to him, he stabbed her 14 times. She was taken to the hospital, but she died while forgiving him. Saint Maria Goretti, pray for us.

María Goretti virgen y mártir italiana de la Iglesia, y una de las santas más jóvenes en ser canonizadas. Nació en el seno de una familia de agricultores. Su padre murió cuando ella tenía nueve años, y la familia tuvo que compartir una casa con otra familia, los Serenelli. Se hizo cargo de las tareas domésticas mientras su madre y sus hermanos trabajaban en el campo. Isabel became a postulant after she turned seventeen and was known amongst her peers for her obedient and silent nature. Isabel also developed a reputation as a hard worker who was contemplative. The Spanish Civil War saw her imprisoned, and anti-religious forces attempted to force her to renounce her faith and subscribe to their regime. Isabel refused to do so and was beaten to death since her captors decided not to shoot her like others had been executed. Saint Isabel, pray for us.

Edith, also known as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was a German philosopher who converted to Catholicism and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. Edith Stein was murdered in the gas chamber at the concentration camp Auschwitz II-Birkenau on August 9, 1942, and is canonized as a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church; she is also one of six patron saints of Europe.
