20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the people to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified.” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified.” 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this righteous man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe upon him, 29 and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head, and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spat upon him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

20 Mientras tanto, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los jefes de los judíos persuadieron al gentío a que pidieran la libertad de Barrabás y la muerte de Jesús. 21 Cuando el gobernador volvió a preguntarles: “¿A cuál de los dos quieren que les suelte?”, ellos contestaron: “A Barrabás.” 22 Pilato les dijo: “¿Y qué hago con Jesús, llamado el Cristo?” Todos contestaron: “¡Crucifícalo!” 23 Pilato insistió: “¿Qué ha hecho de malo?” Pero ellos gritaban cada vez con más fuerza: “¡Que sea crucificado!” 24 Al darse cuenta Pilato de que no conseguía nada, sino que más bien aumentaba el alboroto, pidió agua y se lavó las manos delante del pueblo. Y les dijo: “Ustedes responderán por su sangre, yo no tengo la culpa.” 25 Y todo el pueblo contestó: “¡Que su sangre caiga sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!” 26 Entonces Pilato les soltó a Barrabás. Mando azotar a Jesús y lo entregó a los que debían crucificarlo. 27 Los soldados romanos llevaron a Jesús al patio del palacio y reunieron a toda la tropa en torno a él. 28 Le quitaron sus vestidos y le pusieron una capa de soldado de color rojo. 29 Después le colocaron en la cabeza una corona que habían trenzado con espinos y en la mano derecha le pusieron una caña. Doblaban la rodilla ante Jesús y se burlaban de él, diciendo: “¡Viva el rey de los judíos!” 30 Le escupían en la cara y con la caña le golpeaban en la cabeza. 31 Cuando terminaron de burlarse de él, le quitaron la capa de soldado, le pusieron de nuevo sus ropas y lo llevaron a crucificar.
