A Polish priest and martyr who died in the Auschwitz concentration camps during World War II.
He volunteered to die in place of a man who had a wife and children.
Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer, and after they had been starved with no food or water for three weeks, only Kolbe and three other prisoners remained alive.
The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they gave the four remaining prisoners lethal injections of carbolic acid.
Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the deadly injection.
He died on 14 August 1941.
